RICHARD THORNLEY
CBE MBA PhD CEng FRAeS   

Richard is a seasoned executive with more than thirty-five years of experience in the Aerospace and Defense field, twenty-three  of those years  in Japan.

Establishing Westland Helicopter's office in Tokyo in 1996, he led sales and the marketing , securing business with the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

 

In 2004, Richard joined Rolls-Royce to lead their Japan operations.  Growing the business from 3 to more than 70 employees he secured  new business with ANA, JAL and Skymark whilst maintaining a key relationship with the Japanese Ministry of Defense supporting an installed base of over 1000 gas turbines.

In January 2014, Richard joined Bell Helicopters to establish a new entity in Japan.  His success was evident with record sales to the Japanese Army with Japanese partner Subaru.

Richard holds degrees in Engineering and management, is  a Master of Business Administration, a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and on the board of the British Chamber f Commerce.  

He was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for Japanese industrial relations and business, in the 2012 Queen's birthday honours, and an Honoury Degree of Doctor of Technology from Loughborough University in 2016.
